AC Delayed/Cancelled Flight Compensation Threads

There are several threads on compensation for delayed/cancelled flights operated by AC.

If your question is about which regime(s) you're eligible for compensation under, or which would be more favourable, this is the correct thread.

For information regarding APPR (Canadian regulations), please see: Claiming compensation from AC under APPR (Air Passenger Protection Regulations)

For information on claiming compensation under EU rules (a.k.a. EU261 or EC261), please see: Claiming EU261 Compensation from AC

If I'm reading all of this correctly, you were on the flight, so wouldn't that give you the best access as to why it was being delayed by say, asking the SD?

Per EF it looks like it left the gate at 0844 and took off at 0910...so 26 mins? Not exactly an extended taxi time at YVR depending on ramp congestion, flow control due to weather, etc..

Why is in the 'delayed flight compensation' thread? Per AC, the flt left 34 mins late and arrived 43 mins late, not really compensation eligible.

Hopefully your bags show on the next flight...if not, maybe you can find some compensation there.

Hi all,

can anyone with an EF subscription tell me what’s the “official reason” why AC1978 was delayed by 3h30h on May 17Th?

AC is saying it wasn’t their fault…

thanks

EF only has data going back a week. However, looking on FlightAware, it appears that the incoming was delayed, and that incoming also delayed, and that incoming also delayed. My understanding is that at some point, AC is responsible, as they had enough advance notice of these rolling delays and potentially could sub a different crew/plane. Also not helped by it being a Rouge flight.
Maybe others can chip in as to your chances for any comp.

If you actually escalate it, I think you have a decent chance of winning if AC's cause is "weather affecting the inbound's inbound's inbound's inbound's inbound's inbound's inbound's inbound's inbound".

If you just argue with AC, you have no chance.

Personally (not legally), I have sympathy for (e.g.) AC's CPH-YUL being delayed because YYZ-CPH was delayed due to weather. CPH is not a hub, and there isn't anything they could actually do to avoid the subsequent delay once the first delay becomes known. They can't just send another aircraft to CPH... they already have one that they really want to get there.

I have no sympathy for when weather in SFO "delays" a YYZ-YYT flight.

Flight Cancellation

Hi, I would like to get this group’s feedback. Our flight was originally delayed (would have arrived 9 hours after original arrival time) then finally cancelled. At this point it was past midnight and the gate agents were offering to book hotels for everyone. Because I had a little one, I asked if we could book directly rather than wait in line and she said yes and we would get reimbursed.

I submitted the claim but Air Canada refuses to reimburse me since I’m not considered out of town (lesson learned). However, I also paid for the hotel at my destination that I also can’t get reimbursed so now I’m out $1k in total with no recourse in sight. Both stays are with Marriott and was booked through the AMEX Marriott business card.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I will keep emailing Air Canada but I just can’t believe there’s nothing and it wasn’t even our fault the flight was cancelled.

I have had 100% success calling destination hotels when I've had delays/cancellations, getting that night cancelled for free.

As for reimbursem*nt for the local hotel, I'm not even sure what you're legally entitled to if you're local.

What was the reason for the delay? If it's one where APPR dictates hotel should be provided, I think APPR doesn't distinguish if you're local or not.

That being said, hotel at the originating point is very hard, AC On My Way (back when that was a thing) really tried to get me to take cash for ground transportation reimbursem*nt instead of hotel, since I ended up in transit at my origin. It took a lot of intervention and that was with OMW.

can anyone help me out and look up the details on EF for the flight delay for AC508 on May 28?
gate agent said it was due to crew timing out, but just want to confirm that and have some backup if AC tries to deny compensation for some reason.

Just thought I would share a status update on my complaint. AC800 on 11/30 delayed 3:50. Requested $400 and reimbursem*nt of meals. After reviewed by the CTA, they ruled in AC favor as an unscheduled mechanical issue on the aircraft interphone system. Guess it was making some static noise or something. They did order AC to re-imburse me for my meals by 5/22, but I have yet to see any of that.

Sure was a lot of effort by many people to go through this whole process, and very disappointing communication from AC during the delays as well. Oh well.

Fwiw the communication AC originally gave you was found by the CTA to be the correct assessment of the situation...

Your flight AC800 to Dublin is delayed due to additional time needed for an unscheduled maintenance issue...Your flight AC800 to Dublin is delayed further until 00:30 due to additional time needed to substitute aircraft....
