The Spartans had their three-year run snapped by Alvernia

FLEETWOOD, PA – For the second straight year, the Middle Atlantic Conference Women's Golf Championship tournament was shortened to just an 18-hole event by weather. The York College women's team, the three-time defending champions, finished second in the shortened tournament as Alvernia had a historic day on Saturday.

The Spartans shot 326 in the opening round of the shortened tournament. They were well back of Alvernia as the Golden Wolves played great shooting a school record 306 (+18) to win the tournament, snapping the Spartans' three-year run of dominance in the league tournament.

Hood finished a distant third at 354 followed by Arcadia in fourth with a score of 364. Lebanon Valley (396), Misericordia (397), Albright (400), FDU-Florham (431), Stevenson (436) and King's (449) rounded out the tournament field.

First-year Spartan Victoria Jolakian led the way for the Spartans with a five-over-par 77 to finished tied for second in the tournament. Jolakian bogeyed the first and third holes of her tournament but she settled in and had five pars and a bogey over the final six holes of the front nine as she posted a 38. Jolakian parred the first three holes on the back before going bogey, birdie and double on holes 13, 14, and 15. Jolakian finished her round with three pars for her back nine 38. She finished tied with Alvernia's Katie Lapinsky for second as they both finished five strokes behind tournament champion McKylie Boreman. Boreman fired an even-par 72 for the championship. Boreman had three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars. Jolakian earned first-team All-MAC honors for her finish.

Jolakian was named the MAC Rookie of the Year for her efforts in the tournament. She is the fourth Spartan to earn the Rookie of the Year award joining teammate Tori Blanc (2023), Natalie Robson (2021), and Anna Moore (2019) as Spartans to earn the honor.

Blanc was the next Spartan finisher in the championships as she placed sixth with an eight-over-par 80. Blanc had a rough start to her round as she doubled hole number one and bogeyed two as she was three-over-par through two holes. She steadied the ship and tallied five pars and two bogeys over the final seven holes of the front nine to finish with a score of 41. She had some rough sailing over the first five holes of the back nine with four bogeys and one par. Blanc concluded the round with three pars and a birdie to shoot 39 on the back. Blanc finished as a second-team All-MAC honoree. She is now a two-time All-MAC selection.

First-year Spartan Lily Davis was the next Spartan finisher as she placed tied for seventh with a 12-over-par 84. Davis had a tough start with a triple-bogey on hole number one. She quickly got back on track as she parred her next four holes. She bogeyed the par four sixth but finished the front nine with three pars to shoot a 40. Davis had some challenges on the back nine as she had an eight hole stretch where she was eighth over par before finishing the round with a par. Davis earned second-team All-MAC honors with her seventh-place finish.

Sophom*ore Grace Strickland had a very uncharacteristic round as she finished tied for ninth with an 85. Strickland had six bogeys and three pars on the front for a 42. On the back, Strickland had one double, five bogeys and three pars for a back-nine 43.

Sophom*ore Jess Shay tied for ninth with Strickland. Shay shot 43 on the front with three pars, five bogeys and a double. She started the back nine with two doubles and two bogeys but finished the round with four straight pars.

Strickland and Shay both earned second-team All-MAC honors for their ninth-place finishes.

The Spartans are slated to return their entire lineup for the 2024-25 season.
