History of the Maine Lottery

The Maine Lottery has been paying out great cash prizes and supporting great causes in the state for over 40 years.

The Maine Lottery was established in 1973 after state voters approved its creation. The first drawing was held on June 27th, 1974 and the numbers were drawn by the state's governor, Kenneth M. Curtis. The Tri-State Lottery was approved in April 1985, with Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont agreeing to share games between the three states. The Maine Lottery joined Lotto*America in July 1990, but left when the game ended in April 1992 and was replaced by Powerball. Tickets for the popular multi-state lottery game went back on sale in Maine in 2004 and the state joined Mega Millions in May 2010.

In January 2023, Maine celebrated its first jackpot win in either Powerball or Mega Millions, and it was one of the biggest of all time – a $1.35 billion Mega Millions prize. The winning ticket was sold at Hometown Gas & Grill in the town of Maine. The winner opted to stay anonymous

Revenue raised from Maine Lottery ticket sales is allocated to the state's General Fund. Over $1 billion has been transferred to the fund since 1974. The money is distributed to a variety of programs and services throughout the state. When you play Maine Lottery games, you're not just funding your own dreams - you're helping your fellow residents!
